NaamNet FAQs

(Updated 9/19/98)

Q: What is Naam Net?
A: Naam Net is an email inspirational group.

Q: How is Naam Net different from any other Sikh Net?
A: The big difference is that only persons committed to at least 20 minutes of daily naam simran (preferably at amrit vela) are allowed membership of Naam Net. Another difference is that only *positive* and *inspirational* posts are allowed.

Q: What is so important about amrit vela?
A: An intellectual answer could easily be given; however Naam Net is a "do-it" net; therefore it is preferred that this question be answered from within. For that, the questioner would need to start waking up at amrit vela (anytime from 12.30 am to 6 am) and jap naam for as long as possible and within a month, this question will be answered.

Q: How do I jap naam?
A: There are infinite number of Naam Jaaping techniques. Best is to start verbally jaaping naam. Sit down in a comfortable position and start saying "WaheGuru WaheGuru" verbally. Also say mool manter (Ik-on-kar, sat naam, karta purakh...) - this greatly helps in concentration and just like gur-manter - WaheGuru, mool manter is also meant to be japped by gursikhs. Further techniques and instructions will be given by the guru from within or through naami gursikhs. Ardas along with Naam simran effort will surely produce results.

Q: What is the use of jaaping naam?
A: aso heera nirmal naam, jaas japet puran sabh kaam || Translation: "Such is the (power) of the jewel naam, that jaaping it fulfills all kaam-nama (wishes)"

Q: What is Naam?
A: Naam is many things. On one end of the Naam spectrum, the verbal shabad "WaheGuru" is naam. On the other end of the Naam Spectrum, it is WaheGuru's essence

Q: What is the guru's rehat?
A: Waking up by or before 4 am. Jaaping naam for at *least* 2.5 hours. Doing Nitnem at dawn. Reading gurbaNi with love and attention. Jaaping Naam throughout the day. Doing Nitnem at dusk. Doing seva. Attending keertans. Doing sadh sangat. This along with obeying all the hukams given by the guru panj pyare when the gift of amrit is given.

Q: What if one hasn't taken amrit yet?
A: Then it is best that one follow the rehat as if one *has* taken amrit. Then when amrit is eventually given, the gursikh will have a better time at following the guru's hukam and thus obtain guru's nadar (graceful look) earlier.

Q: When was Naam Net started?
A: October 1996.

Q: Who started Naam Net?
A: A group of gursikhs who wanted to motivate and get motivated to jap naam.

Q: Are only amrit dharis allowed on Naam Net?
A: Everyone one is allowed on Naam Net. The only requirement is a committment to Naam Simran. Naam is such a strong force that it purifies everyone. All non-amrit dharis are, however, encouraged to take this wonderful step of becoming guru-vaale - the benefits are tremedous and can only be experienced after taking amrit.

Q: What is the goal of Naam Net?
A: Naam Net's goal is that all Naam Net members do at least 2.5 hours of daily Naam Simran at amrit vela.

Q: Why 2.5 hours?
A: Because this is roughly the equivalent of the dasvand of the day. And it is believed along with dan dasvand a gursikh must also take out dasvand of Naam Simran. Many naami gursikhs, such as Baba Nand Singh jee, Baba Isher Singh jee and Baba Puran Singh jee) attest to this.

Q: What if I have questions about Naam and Naam Jaaping?
A: Contact the Naam Net admin and you will be directed to one of the many naami gursikhs present on Naam Net.

Q: How do I post onto Naam Net?
A: Write to NaamNetOrg@yahoogroups.com.

Q: How do I know if my post qualifies for Naam Net?
A: To be qualified a post must possess the following 2 qualities:

    1. It must be directly or indirectly related to Naam (for example: gurbaNI, saakhis, naami gursikh quotations, gurmat-oriented poems, gurmat-oriented and positive humour).

    2. It must be positive. Be-littling of other religions, other gursikh jathas, other gursikhs or for that matters, other humans is *not* allowed.

Q: What if I disagree with ideas on a Naam Net post?
A: Then, please contact the author *privately* with your ideas.

Q. What services does Naam Net provide?
A: One is the SMA (Sakhi Mentoring Arrangements). In this system a sakhi mentoree is "connected" with a sakhi mentor. The mentoree makes up a schedule (for example, wake up at 3am amrit vela and do simran for 2.5 hours for at least 40 days). Then that schedule is reported to the mentor. Then the mentoree reports to the mentor everyday or every 2 or 3 days (via email) "reporting" if the schedule was indeed kept.

This way, because the sakhi has to report to someone, greater motivation is received.

Also, the mentor can answer any questions about Naam or gurmat which the mentoree might have. The mentor is usually someone who is well on the Naam path and has either faced the common Naam path problems or does know about them and how to solve them.

Another is forming Sakhi Circles. This is an group of Sakhis who "band" together and discuss naam on an informal basis.

Please let the admin know if anyone is interested in SMA or getting onto a Sakhi Circle.
